Jason Adriaan is the founder of Local List - the first and only South African Internet directory that indexes locally hosted content. An ISLabs-supported project, Local List provides South African Internet users with list of websites and services they can access with local-only Internet accounts.
According to Jason, Local List is delivering an essential service that local-only Internet users cannot do without. 'Local-only Internet accounts are uncapped and serve as the most affordable form of Internet in South Africa. All Internet users in South Africa that reach their bandwidth limit automatically become restricted to local-only. There are also a number of South Africans that primarily buy local-only Internet accounts. All of these users that are limited to local-only Internet thus automatically become a Local List user.'
Jason says that the goal of Local List is to bring cheap broadband internet access to schools and homes around the country and to provide underprivileged groups with their first contact with broadband internet as a learning tool and a communication tool.'
Jason believes that local-only internet has enormous potential to increase broadband internet usage in SA and hopes to facilitate a discussion around how to increase broadband penetration in South Africa at the retreat.
